Nervous System Regulation

Nervous system regulation is a therapeutic process that supports healing by helping your body move out of fight, flight, or freeze and into a state of calm, presence, and resilience.

When you experience stress, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in. This is your body’s “fight or flight” response: it gets you ready to deal with a threat by increasing your heart rate, tensing your muscles, and sharpening your focus. You might feel anxious, restless, or on edge.

Once the danger or stress has passed, your parasympathetic nervous system is supposed to take over. This is your “rest and digest” system: it slows your heart rate, relaxes your body, and helps you feel calm and safe again.

However, if your body gets stuck in fight/flight/freeze mode – often because of chronic stress or past trauma – it can be hard for your nervous system to shift back into the calm state. Nervous system regulation helps you retrain your body to move more easily between these two states and return to balance.

Nervous system regulation teaches you how to recognize and shift your body’s response to stress, so you can feel more grounded, connected, and resilient.

This approach is informed by neuroscience and draws from:

  • Neuroplasticity-based brain retraining
  • Polyvagal theory
  • Somatic psychology
  • Trauma-informed care

Therapists using nervous system regulation techniques help clients develop greater awareness of their internal state and guide them in practices that promote safety, regulation, and healing.

Who It Can Help

Clients often seek out nervous system regulation therapy for symptoms such as:

  • Chronic anxiety or panic
  • Emotional numbness or depression
  • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping
  • Relationship patterns shaped by reactivity or avoidance
  • Lingering effects of trauma or developmental wounds
  • Chronic pain

Nervous system regulation supports both healing and personal growth by helping you return to a regulated, empowered state.

How Nervous System Regulation Works

Nervous system regulation is helpful for anyone who feels stuck in cycles of anxiety, emotional reactivity, shutdown, or burnout.

It’s especially effective for individuals recovering from trauma, those with highly sensitive nervous systems, and anyone who struggles with managing intense emotions.

In therapy, we work to build your awareness of what’s happening in your body.

You’ll learn to recognize the signs of dysregulation – like shallow breathing, racing thoughts, tension, or disconnection – and gently shift your state using techniques rooted in somatic awareness, breathwork, visualization, and co-regulation.

This approach is collaborative and empowering. Together, we explore what helps your body feel safe and connected. Some sessions may involve grounding practices or gentle movement; others may focus on exploring the roots of your nervous system’s protective responses. Over time, you build a greater sense of choice and flexibility in how you respond to stress.

Unlike talk therapy alone, nervous system regulation doesn’t require you to rehash every painful memory. Instead, it invites you to stay present with your body’s experience in a way that feels manageable and respectful. Many clients find that this body-based work helps them access deeper healing and a more lasting sense of calm than they’ve been able to achieve through cognitive approaches alone.

Whether you’re looking to feel less anxious in your daily life, heal from trauma, or improve your relationships, this approach offers a gentle yet powerful path to lasting change.

Our Backgrounds with Nervous System Regulation

Alison Shea

I started exploring nervous system regulation in my life after years of stress and trauma left me feeling stuck in survival mode (panic attacks, insomnia, relationship turmoil, and difficulty focusing – to name a few symptoms). I use brain retraining, somatic therapy, and co-regulation to help rewire the brain’s stress response by creating new, healthier neural pathways. These therapeutic approaches teach the brain to shift out of fight-or-flight and into a state of calm and healing. By incorporating these techniques in my individual and couples therapy work, clients not only understand the problem, but create lasting change by rewiring the brain.

For years, I thought insight alone would bring ease, but my nervous system told a different story. My own healing taught me what so many of my clients feel: knowing the “why” doesn’t always help your body feel safe. That’s what brought me to nervous system regulation—not just as a tool, but as a foundation. In my work with individuals and couples, I integrate my advanced training in somatic therapy, parts work, sensory regulation strategies, and attachment based trauma care to support clients in shifting out of survival mode. Whether we’re working through relational conflict, shutdown, perfectionism, or anxiety, I help clients recognize their body’s cues and build the capacity to stay present, connected, and grounded even when things feel hard.

Liz Delaney

For much of my life, I struggled to regulate my emotions, especially in relationships or when I was under stress. Learning that I was neurodivergent changed everything. Instead of working against my brain, I began learning how to work with it. That shift helped me understand my reactions and gave me tools to find more calm and clarity. I now use this nervous system lens in all of my work with clients. With children, I incorporate the Zones of Regulation to help them name what they are feeling and what their body is experiencing. With teens and adults, we talk about the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Understanding how our nervous system works can reduce shame and increase compassion for ourselves. I also incorporate vagal nerve exercises to support regulation. Stimulating the vagus nerve activates the calming part of the nervous system, sending a powerful signal of safety. Over time, this helps the body shift out of chronic reactivity and into a more grounded, responsive state.
