What Is Brainspotting Therapy?
If you’ve been feeling stuck in cycles of emotional pain, anxiety, or unresolved trauma, even after trying talk therapy or other approaches, Brainspotting may offer something different. It’s a powerful brain-body therapy that helps uncover and heal the deeper layers of distress that often live below the surface of conscious awareness.

Brainspotting works by using specific eye positions called brainspots that link to unprocessed experiences stored in the brain and body. When we find and hold your gaze on one of these brainspots, it allows your nervous system to access and release the emotional or physical tension that’s been held there. In other words, where you look affects how you feel.
This approach was developed in 2003 by Dr. David Grand, who originally trained in EMDR therapy. While working with clients, he noticed that simply focusing on a certain eye position allowed for deeper emotional processing and healing. Brainspotting has since been used worldwide to support people recovering from trauma, anxiety, grief, performance blocks, and more.
This method is gentle but powerful. It doesn’t require you to retell your story in detail, which can be especially helpful if traditional talk therapy has felt overwhelming or hasn’t brought the kind of relief you were looking for.

How Brainspotting Works and Who Can Benefit
During a Brainspotting session, the therapist helps identify a spot in the client’s visual field connected to the feelings or distress they are experiencing. This spot is often found by observing natural reflexes like changes in breath or blinking when discussing difficult topics. The client then focuses their gaze on this spot and tunes into internal sensations while the therapist offers support.

No effort to analyze or force change is required; the brain and body naturally do the healing work. This approach is particularly suitable for people who find it hard to talk about difficult experiences or those who have insight into their challenges but still feel stuck.
Brainspotting is used to address a range of concerns, including:
- Trauma from single incidents or long-term developmental sources1
- Anxiety and chronic worry
- Panic attacks and nervous system dysregulation
- Grief and loss
- Chronic stress or burnout
- Creative blocks and performance anxiety

One unique strength of Brainspotting is its ability to reach brain areas responsible for instinctive responses and stored trauma that are often inaccessible through words alone. Many clients report feeling more grounded, less reactive, and better equipped to manage stress after sessions.
Brainspotting is often combined with mindfulness techniques, nervous system regulation strategies, and relational support to create a personalized and holistic healing process. Clients frequently experience increased emotional control, relief from old patterns, and a stronger connection to their inner resilience.
Even if previous therapy attempts have not been successful, Brainspotting can offer a new path toward healing.
