Art Therapy
What Is Art Therapy?

Art therapy invites you to step beyond words and into the world of color, texture, and creation, a space where healing unfolds through the imagination. It harnesses the power of creative expression to help you explore feelings, process experiences, and rediscover yourself in ways that traditional talk therapy may not reach.
Founded in the mid 1900s by visionaries like Margaret Naumburg and Edith Kramer, art therapy blends psychology with art making, offering a bridge between inner experience and outward expression. Over decades, research has shown art therapy to be an effective treatment for emotional distress, trauma, anxiety, depression, and more.
At our Arvada practice, our Art Therapists are here to help you understand the different parts of yourself—each with its own strategy to protect you. Reach out today for a FREE consultation at (720)-580-3866.
What How Art Therapy Works and Who It Can Help?

At Rocky Mountain Relational Therapy, art therapy is a part of our holistic healing toolbox.
This approach invites you to create tangible expressions of your internal world whether through drawing, painting, or collage. These art pieces become windows into your feelings and stories, fostering insight, self awareness, and emotional release.
Art therapy is beneficial for individuals of all ages—children, teens, adults, and families—who may struggle to express their thoughts and emotions through words alone. It provides a safe, creative outlet.
Art therapy supports healing from trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and identity struggles. It can also help with stress management, emotional regulation, self-esteem building, chronic illness, relationship challenges, and navigating life transitions.
By engaging with art materials in a nonjudgmental space, clients often experience relief from emotional overwhelm, gain clarity and insight into their feelings, improve communication skills, and develop new coping strategies that foster resilience and personal growth.
Unlike talk therapy alone, art therapy reaches into the subconscious, unlocking emotions and memories that might otherwise remain hidden (Kramer 1971; Rubin 2016). Clients learn to identify feelings, cultivate mindfulness, and build resilience. We often combine art therapy with modalities like narrative therapy, somatic therapy, parts work therapy for a richer, personalized experience.
Our hope is that clients emerge from art therapy feeling more connected to their authentic selves, equipped with creative tools for ongoing growth and self care.
Our Experience with Art Therapy

Our therapists at Rocky Mountain Relational Therapy bring training and years of experience in art therapy. Our clinicians completed their Marriage and Family Therapy master’s program at Regis University, where they received specialized education in integrating creative and expressive modalities into clinical practice.
Liz Delaney, MA, MFTC completed her certification in Systemic Art Therapy through the Colorado School for Family Therapy in May 2026.
We are passionate about using art therapy to meet clients where they are and guide them toward healing through creative exploration. We tailor sessions to each client’s needs and preferences, providing a safe, supportive environment for expression and growth.
