Teen Therapy

Is Your Teen Struggling And You’re Not Sure How To Help?

  • Are you noticing shifts in your child’s mood, motivation, or behavior?
  • Have they become more withdrawn, anxious, irritable, or quick to anger?
  • Is school becoming a daily battle, whether due to academic pressure, peer drama, or avoidance?
  • Do you feel like your once-close connection has faded, and they won’t let you in?

Adolescence is a time of tremendous change and growth, but it can also bring intense emotional struggle. Teens today face an overwhelming mix of stressors, including social media, academic pressure, identity exploration, mental health challenges, and the lingering effects of post-pandemic disconnection.

As a parent, it can be heartbreaking to watch your child struggle and feel unsure of how to help. You may be doing everything you can—offering support, setting boundaries, trying to listen—but still feel like nothing is working. Maybe your teen brushes off your concerns or shuts down when you try to connect. They might say everything is “fine,” but you know deep down that something isn’t right.

You want to support them, but they may need someone outside the family who they can truly open up to.

With the guidance of a compassionate, experienced therapist, your teen can learn how to manage stress, process emotions, and reconnect with their sense of self.

Our Arvada-based therapists specialize in Adolescent and Teen therapy and are here to help you regain control. If trauma is driving your decisions and preventing you from living fully, reach out today for a FREE consultation at (720)-580-3866.

In recent years, adolescents have reported higher rates of anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm than ever before. According to the CDC, 42% of high school students reported persistent sadness or hopelessness1. And for many young people, the added stressors of social media, academic pressure, climate anxiety, identity exploration, and post-pandemic disconnection have made life even more complicated.

It’s no surprise that adolescence can be a rocky time. Young people are learning to manage big emotions while their brains are still developing. They’re navigating a mix of increased independence and ongoing reliance on caregivers. Add in hormonal changes, social stress, and growing expectations, and it’s easy to see how an adolescent might become overwhelmed.

At the same time, many adolescents struggle to ask for help. They might not have the words to describe what they’re feeling, or they might worry about being misunderstood, judged, or labeled. Often, this leads to them pulling away or acting out—leaving parents confused, hurt, and unsure of what to do next.

But with the right support, things can shift. Therapy gives adolescents a space to feel safe, seen, and heard, without pressure or judgment. Over time, this can lead to improved mood, healthier coping, and more open communication at home.

We specialize in helping adolescents navigate the unique challenges of this developmental stage with curiosity and compassion. Our work focuses on building trust, exploring emotions, developing coping strategies, and helping young people connect more deeply with themselves and others.

Helping Adolescents Understand And Regulate Emotions

One of the most common struggles adolescents face is emotional intensity. Through therapy, we help young people understand the “why” behind their big feelings and teach them how to regulate in moments of overwhelm. Whether your adolescent is navigating anxiety, sadness, anger, or shame, therapy offers skills and strategies to manage emotions effectively and with self-compassion.

Supporting Identity Development And Self-Esteem

Adolescents are in the process of figuring out who they are. That can include questions about gender identity, sexuality, neurodivergence, values, or social roles. Therapy offers a nonjudgmental space where adolescents can explore these questions openly and without fear. We help them build a stronger sense of self and feel empowered to show up authentically.

Strengthening Communication And Relationships

Many adolescents feel misunderstood by the adults in their lives. We help bridge that gap. In addition to supporting your child individually, we may work with you (as parents or caregivers) to improve family communication, reduce conflict, and create new pathways for connection. You’ll also gain tools to better understand and support your adolescent’s unique needs.

What Sessions Are Like:

Therapy sessions are typically held weekly and tailored to meet your adolescent exactly where they are. We take time to build trust and create safety—because a genuine relationship is at the heart of all meaningful change. Depending on the adolescent’s preferences, we may use talk therapy, creative expression (like art or writing), mindfulness, or somatic tools.

We also recognize that adolescents don’t exist in a vacuum, they’re part of a larger system that includes family, school, and social environments. Often, it’s not just the adolescent who is “the problem,” but rather the system around them that needs support, understanding, and healing. For that reason, we may recommend family therapy sessions to address patterns of communication, roles, expectations, and emotional dynamics at home.

Family therapy offers a chance to shift out of blame and into connection. It can help everyone in the household better understand each other, reduce conflict, and create a more supportive foundation for your adolescent’s growth.

Some of the approaches we may incorporate include:

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills – supporting emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills
  • Parts Work/Internal Family Systems (IFS) – exploring the different parts of their internal world
  • Brainspotting and Nervous System Regulation Therapy– for trauma, overwhelm, or nervous system dysregulation
  • Narrative Therapy – helping adolescents make sense of their experiences and rewrite limiting internal stories
  • Art Therapy – a powerful option for those who process better through creativity than conversation
  • Family Therapy – creating space for shared insight, healing, and healthier patterns within the family system

We match our therapeutic approach to your adolescent’s unique personality, preferences, and needs.

What if my adolescent refuses to come?

This is a common concern. Many adolescents are unsure what therapy will be like and may be nervous or resistant at first. That’s okay. We often start by helping you, as the caregiver, find language that feels inviting rather than pushy. If your adolescent agrees to try one session, we focus first on building trust and creating a space where they don’t feel judged or pressured. In some cases, starting with family therapy may actually be a better fit—especially if your adolescent feels more comfortable engaging with a trusted adult alongside them. Family work can ease them into the process while also addressing patterns in the home that may be contributing to their distress.

Will I be involved in the therapy process?

Yes and also, we respect your adolescent’s privacy. While sessions are usually one-on-one, we periodically check in with caregivers and may recommend joint sessions or family support when helpful. We always work in collaboration with the family system, balancing your teen’s autonomy with your involvement and support.

What if therapy labels my child or makes them feel different?”

We understand this fear and we want to normalize that therapy is a supportive space, not a sign of failure or brokenness. Adolescents come to therapy for many reasons, from stress management and self-exploration to healing from trauma or mental health concerns. We approach every young person with respect and curiosity, not judgment or labels.

It’s Possible For Your Teen To Feel More Confident, Connected, And Supported

Adolescents don’t have to go through this alone, and neither do you. With the right support, your child can develop resilience, self-understanding, and emotional tools that will serve them throughout their life.

We offer free 15-minute consultations to help you explore whether adolescent therapy is the right fit. Whether you are local to Arvada or seeking virtual support, we are here for you.
